You've spent time trying to increase domain authority but are not seeing the results you expected.
Your frustration is understandable, as 42% of marketers evaluate a site's backlink quality and domain authority.
Every brand wants to rank higher in search results than their competitors and claim the top spot.
Link equity is important, but you shouldn't obsess about domain authority. Domain authority is not something you should treat as a vanity metric.
You can't fake authority. Let me help you to understand the areas where you can be competitive.
Sound good? What is it that domain authority can do to increase its value?
What is Domain Authority? Why is it Important?
This term may be familiar to you, but you don't really know what it means.
You are correct, it is, especially when it comes to search engine ranking.
Domain authority is the number and quality of backlinks – links from reliable websites that point to your website – that your site has. Relevant links are important because they influence your score.
Moz developed the domain authority metric. This scoring system allows you to compare websites and track the site's ranking over time.
Some brands don't need to try to be authoritative.
Dropbox is one example. Because of the visual content that is shared between people for both personal and business purposes, it has high domain authority. This creates unique domain backlinks in addition to total backlinks, which boosts Dropbox's domain authority.
What is the point of all this?
Although domain authority is not a Google ranking factor one study showed a link between SERP ranking and domain authority.
This study suggests that domain authority could be an effective metric to calculate the potential volume organic traffic from Google.
You can improve your SEO rankings by focusing on your strategy to increase domain authority.
If you don't see results immediately, don't lose heart.
It might take time to establish authority.
Why does Domain Authority take so long to build?
Backlinks are crucial for determining domain authority, as you may have seen. The number of backlinks is one of the most important ranking variables.
SEO is slow and steady. It all depends on your efforts.
Optimizing your website more effectively is possible when you have a better understanding about the keywords you are an authority on.
It goes beyond keywords.
Your chances of increasing domain authority are greater if you have a larger backlink profile.
Domain authority is determined using a logarithmic scale. Solo stats will not always have the same impact on the score. The greater the impact, the higher the metric.
How does this impact the time it takes to increase domain authority.
It all depends.
Although I understand that this is not what you want, it's still hard to explain why you won't be in the top spots right away.
Even with great content and a solid strategy, your site won't be in the right place due to its newness, lack of content history or limited backlink profile.
It is possible to achieve a high rank – it was never something I said wasn't possible. It won't be easy.
As you are playing catch-up, I will clear up some myths to help you decide what you should focus on in order to increase domain authority.
Although these concepts sound great, it is important to actually see them in action. My team and I conducted a detailed analysis of domain ratings and referring sites to find out what factors contributed to the domain growth of a few sites.
To measure domain growth, we followed three websites from July 2013 through July 2022. We compared this data with their backlinks and referring domains to gain insights into potential correlations to increase domain authority.
Let's take a look at the lessons we learned from Netlify, Digital Ocean and Linode data insights in the cloud software provider market.
Netlify – Why referring domain quality is important
[TAG1]
Ahrefs tools show that Netlify did not see a rise in domain ratings until March 2015, when they reached 25 with 34 referring domains. Netlify's domain authority grew to an astonishing 71 in 2015 with 201 refer domains.
They started 2017 with a domain score 70 and had 443 referring sites. By 2017, they had a total of 78 and 1,531 referring domains. It took them approximately a year to improve 8 points. They doubled the number of links to their website. This is evident by the huge gains in domain rating.
They increased from 78 domains to 83 in 2018, with 3,283 referring sites. Their link-building efforts were just slightly more than twice as successful.
They maintained their 83 position at the start of 2020 and rose 3 places to an 86 with 14,479 domains at the close of 2021.
They currently sit at 88 in their domain rating, with 24,423 domains referring to them.
Their backlink profile includes 90% of links from sites with a 0-10 distribution. Many sites within that range have a high domain authority of 88 and will link to them. However, it is the bulk of their backlink profile.
Only 4% of their URL distribution comes via sites with a domain authority 50 or higher. There are many URLs, with the most popular being.com. Their links are 88% do-follow, which allows them to pass on their link equity.
It is important to remember that the scores on your referring domains are only one aspect of the equation. You should be focusing on quality and not quantity.

Digital Ocean The Referring Domain Leader
[TAG3]
Digital Ocean did not see a domain rating score from Ahrefs until March 31, 2015. They had reached 12,644 domains. Digital Ocean started with a score of 87, and climbed to 89 by the end 2015, when they had 17,878 referring sites.
Digital Ocean was ranked 89 in its domain rating at the beginning of 2016, with 18,884 domains referring to it. Through the year, their domain rating remained constant in 2019.
Digital Ocean remained at 89 in 2017 with 25.6K referring sites. Digital Ocean does not reach the 90 mark until half-way through 2018, when it gains 1 point.
Digital Ocean remains at 90 throughout 2019 and most 2020. They reached 91 in Sept. 2020 with 57.973 referring domains. They closed 2021 with a 91 domain rating and 59.5K domains, almost doubling the number of referring domains.
Digital Ocean's number of referring domains dropped to 58.8K at the beginning of 2020. Digital Ocean was down to 90 by 2020. This means that Digital Ocean has been removed from several pages to which they were linked or that a site they were linking to is no more active.
They switch back and forth between 91 and 90, and back to 91 occasionally over the course 2021. End 2021 with 72.344 referring domains.
Digital Ocean has maintained its 91 domain ranking with an impressive 86.822 referring domains.
71% of their backlinks are from sites with a score between 0 and 10. Their domain authority is high at 91. Many sites will link to them. However, it accounts for the bulk of their backlink profile. Only 4% of their URL distribution comes via sites with a 50-plus domain authority. There are many URLs, with the most popular being.com. 73% of the links they provide are do-follow, which allows them to pass on their link equity.
[TAG4]
Linode – Evidence on Site Authority
[TAG5]
Linode is a similar story. They didn't have a domain rating above 85 until March 31, 2015. There were 6,824 domains referring to them. Linode finished 2015 with 9,031 domains referring to it and an 85 domain rating.
Linode began 2016 at 85. Linode ended 2016 at 85.
2018 is here and Linode finally reaches 85 with 11,572 domains referring to it.
2019 begins at 85 for domain rating, and then drops to 10,915 domains. Linode quickly drops to an 85 for domain rating and works to rebuild their referring domains. They reached 11,469 referring sites and then hit an 85 in early 2019. They break their plateau in mid-2019, hitting an 86 domain rating and achieving 14,546 refer domains. They are at 86 and 15,957 respectively by the end of 2019.
2020 was pretty consistent, but Linode saw some changes in the next year. They start at 86, but then drop to 85 with 19,882 referring sites. 2022 begins with 86 being reclaimed for a domain rating, and 20,462 domains. 2022 has so far seen 86 domain ratings and 23,666 refering domains.
Their backlink profile includes 92% of their backlinks coming from sites with a score between 0 and 10. Their domain authority is 86. This means that many sites within this range will want to link with them. However, it accounts for the bulk of their backlink profile. Only 3% of their URL distribution comes via sites with a domain authority 50 or higher. There are many URLs, with the most popular being.com. 77% of the links are dofollow, which increases domain authority.
[TAG6]
These three websites provide data that shows it takes approximately 23,000 to 25,000 domains to reach the mid- to high 80 score for domain rating.
It seems that the higher domain rating score correlates with the number of referring domains.
Digital Ocean has tripled the number of referring domains to its competitors. Their domain rating score is 91 with an impressive 86 822 referring domains. Netlify has a score of88 when compared to Digital Ocean with 24,423 domains referring to them, and Linode with 23,666 domains referring back to them at an 86.
Linode was the most difficult of all three to maintain and build its domain rating score.
They lost referring sites more often and had lower percentages of domain ratings scores of 50 or higher. This was a sign that they were either average or good at referring domains. Linode was able to distribute 3% of its URLs from domain authorities of 50 or more, while Digital Ocean and Netlify had 4%.
The small difference in Netlify's 24,423 referring sites and Linode’s 23,666 is due to Netlify's higher percentage of domain ratings of 50 or more.
What does this all mean?
Their domain rating has been boosted by having more quality sites passing their authority to Netlify.
It takes approximately 34 domains to reach a domain rating of 25, based on Netlify's example. Netlify took 1 year to go from a 25-to-a 71 score with 304 referring sites. Digital Ocean took one year to grow from a 87 to 89.
This means that the closer you are to a domain ranking of 100, the more difficult and longer it takes for your authority to grow.
It's easy to move from 0 to 10 but it is much more difficult to increase a site's domain rating score year after year.

Common Myths About Domain Authority
Domain authority is not always simple.
We can however, separate certain domain authority myths and the facts.
Myth 1 – Backlinks don't really matter that much
This is a fascinating question because more traffic equals more traffic, which leads to higher rankings.
Even if you only have a handful of quality backlinks, you'll notice that this is more effective than many ineffective ones.
It is worth your time if the links are relevant and trusted by searchers online.
Myth 2 – Never get links from a site with a lower domain authority than you
Domain authority covers all metrics. Therefore, a link to a page with a lower domain authority won't be penalized.
This could be a site that you are just starting to work with. Sites that have only a few or no local links will be fine.
Do not worry if they have low domain authority. They will still be valuable and can even slow down your progress. They can still be useful if they are high quality sites that provide links editorially and link to other great websites.
Myth 3 – Getting links too fast could be suspicious
Google focuses on spammy links and spammy-looking sites. Google will take a closer look at the page if they are triggered by any activity. This could result in penalizing the site.
Google can detect suspicious activity by detecting black hat link building or link buying.
It's okay to increase the number of links you have. It is your goal to increase domain authority.
Make sure that the links come from trusted and reliable sites. Never, ever use bulk purchase links.
Conclusion
It can be difficult to increase domain authority if you approach it blindly and have no plans.
Although it is possible to increase your domain authority, it can take some time, especially considering the tips that you use.
Ratings are affected by many elements and it can be difficult to assess them all.
It's worth learning domain authority and optimizing for it.
This toolkit could help you gain a better understanding of your online presence and website health.
All metrics, as I said, count and contribute towards your domain authority.
